Event

Arpilleras and Belonging

Overview

What helps us feel that we belong, and feel strong and safe within our community?

A 3-session, in-person workshop for women with a migrant background or female foreign-language speakers in Finland. A space to share stories, experiences, and nurture our sense of belonging in the place we now call home.

In a safe and caring space, we will practice active listening and collective support. Through the art of arpilleras, we will create a visual and textile testimony that can accompany us in moments of vulnerability.

No prior experience is needed, only a willingness to take part.

What is an Arpillera?

Originally, an arpillera was a sturdy fabric made from plant fibers and used for sacks carrying food. In Chile, arpilleras have become a form of artistic expression and collective memory, through which stories, experiences, and histories are stitched into cloth.
